Common questions

If yours is not here, email or call us and we will answer it.

Joining

Does it cost anything to join?
No. Joining is free and it stays free. We will never ask you to pay for anything, and we will never ask you for bank or card details.
Who can join?
Anyone 18 or older living in the United States, with an email address they check. You do not need any particular background. Studies look for all sorts of people.
Can more than one person in my house join?
Yes. Each person needs their own email address, and each person can hold one membership. If two people sign up with the same address, only the first one is registered.
Do I have to live near you?
No. Most of our research is online and runs nationwide, so you can take part from anywhere in the country. In person studies run all over the country too, at research facilities and at meeting spaces we book close to the people we need to talk to.

Taking part

How often will I hear from you?
It varies. We only contact you when a study matches you, so it depends on what our clients are looking for at the time. Some members hear from us most months and others go longer between invitations. We do not send newsletters or marketing.
Do I have to accept every study?
No. Every invitation tells you what is involved, how long it takes, and what it pays. You decide. Turning one down does not affect the invitations you get later.
How are people chosen for a study?
Each study is looking for a particular kind of person. We match that against what you told us when you signed up. Keeping your details current gives you a better chance of being picked.
What is a home use test?
You use a product at home for a set period and tell us how it went. We usually ship it to you. Sometimes we ask you to buy it yourself, often from Amazon, so the test matches a real purchase, and we cover the cost when we do. Most tests ask for short diary entries as you go. These studies pay for your time rather than a flat fee.
Do I keep the products I test?
It depends on the study, and the invitation says so before you agree. Either way, keeping a product is not the payment. You are paid for your time on top.
What if I lose my internet connection during a survey?
Your answers are saved as you go. Open the same link again and you will pick up where you stopped.
What is the difference between online and in person studies?
Online studies are surveys, video interviews, and video group discussions you do from home. In person studies are focus groups, taste tests, and product sessions held at a research facility or a booked meeting space near you. In person studies usually take longer and pay more.

Getting paid

How does payment work?
You are paid after you finish. Most studies pay by Amazon gift card or PayPal. In person sessions usually pay cash on the day. The invitation tells you which one applies before you agree.
How much do studies pay?
It depends on the study and how much of your time it takes. Short online surveys are at the lower end. In person sessions are at the higher end, and some longer projects pay several hundred dollars. The ranges are on the home page.
When will I be paid?
In person sessions pay you on the day. For online studies, payment is sent after the study closes and the responses have been checked. If it has been longer than you expected, contact us.

Your details

Who sees what I tell you?
Our staff see your details. Your survey answers are reported to the client who commissioned the study, usually combined with everyone else's. We do not sell your contact details, and we do not pass them to anyone who wants to sell you something.
Will anyone try to sell me something?
No. This is research. We contact you to ask you to take part in studies and for nothing else. If anyone contacts you claiming to be us and asks you to buy something or hand over bank details, it is not us. Tell us about it.
How do I update my details or leave the panel?
Email us at info@cityresearchconsumerpanel.com and tell us what to change, or that you want to be removed. We will take care of it.
